Road hazards come in all shapes and sizes. Two of the most hazardous road and parking lot obstacles are curbs and
potholes
! Can you remember a time you hit one of the two and thought “oh no, that didn’t feel good”?
Our team is dedicated to helping drivers in and out of our shops, so we’ve compiled a list of “quick checks” in case you have a run-in with one of these driver enemies. Find out what to do if you hit a curb or a pothole around Pennsylvania.
1. Hitting a Pothole
It's no secret that Pennsylvania roads are littered with pesky and dangerous potholes. We’re sure one stands out among the rest in your mind. Most drivers can agree that hitting a pothole is not only annoying but worrisome—a big one can cause costly damage such as:
Alignment
Damage
Wheel
or
tire
damage
Brake damage
Quick Tip: Drivers should try not to slam on their brakes when hitting a pothole to avoid causing more damage.
2. Hitting a Curb
Sometimes, curbs or parking barriers in parking lots can be hard to see and harder to account for when driving. Even hitting a curb when parallel parking can cause minor damage to your tires. Other damages that can be inflicted upon your car if you accidentally hit a curb include:
Alignment Damage
Suspension Damage
Dented or Damaged Wheel
Damage to the Sidewall or Tread
Flat Tire
What to Look For When You Hit a Pothole or Curb:
If you hit a curb or pothole, pull over carefully and assess the damage to make sure you can safely continue to drive.
Check tires/wheel for any obvious damage
Look for cuts, scrapes, or chips out of the wheel or tire.
Check under the car for any obvious/visible damage
If you see parts hanging low it could indicate damage to tie rods or control arms. It is not safe to drive under these conditions.
Check for steering problems
From behind the wheel, can you feel if your steering is shaking? Are you driving straight or do you have to compensate and control your vehicle from veering off course? Do not drive if this is the case.
